Chapter 21

The large windows were papered with yellowing newsprint, but the large stenciled letters said Bobby's Books. A rusty bell rang when the top of the door hit it, and an older lady looked up from the counter. Her faint wrinkles reminded me of my mother, and the fact she was a red head too. I did my best to hide my fangs as I took a look around. The store was filled with books and odd knickknacks. There wasn't a speck of dust, which was strange. The moldy book smell was missing too.

“Yes, we're open. May I help you?” She sang.

Approaching the woman slowly, I looked past her bifocal covered eyes to the sign on the counter that read, “Cash only.”

“Are you Bobby?” I asked with my head turned scanning the books. I read their titles clearly even though they were across the room.

She removed her glasses and put her book aside. “Depends on who’s asking?”

I was mentally kicking myself, I should have called. Most people were sheep and vamps could take advantage. But some humans wouldn't even trust a bleeder. Bobby was selling illegal wares, she wasn't sheepish at all.

“I’m Noir. I work at the University's Hospital. I am looking for the Frasers.”

“The Frasers haven't heard of them.” She lied, I could tell. I was getting better at reading body language since the bleeders, and new vamps showed so little of it. I knew if I had a whopping dose of vamp juju I could touch her hand and read her. But I hadn’t been close to a vamp all day. Plus people just didn't let you touch them long enough for me to work my weak ability.

My hand went to my neck to feel my seven pointed star pendent. I wouldn't trade it for the world. I dug in my pocket, and she panicked. I held up my other hand in surrender. “I just want to barter.” I dropped the tiny vials in front of her. It was the last of my supply but all I had to offer.

Bobby scooped up all the ingests, and I sighed.

“This information is valuable to you?”

“Yes, I know they live above your shop.” I looked in her eyes this time. “Their little boy Zack will be coming home tomorrow, maybe tonight.” Suddenly I felt unsure. I didn't know how it all worked. Would they have to pick him up, would he be transported by the hospital? “I just wanted to be here when he gets home, I promised him.”

She scowled and stared at me through squinted eyes. “No one comes home.”

The words echoed in my ears duplicating the boy’s words, making them all too real. It was what I had secretly feared. The little boy had a reason to be afraid.

“Besides, the Frasers moved last year when the boy was red stamped.”

I gulped. My mouth was suddenly dry; I didn't know what to say. Realizing the boy would be juiced, I finally managed a quiet, “I didn't know.” He would be drained of all his blood now that it was infection free.
